Coolrec and Van Gansewinkel Groep are working on a bicycle made from 100% recycled materials
11-05-2011
Coolrec and Van Gansewinkel have entered into a collaboration with Gazelle in order to build bicycles from 100% recycled materials. We are investigating how recycled materials from scrapped bicycles can be used for the manufacture of new bicycles and have set up a study into the return logistics for scrapped bicycles.
Coolrec’s initial mass balance analysis indicates that 91% of scrapped bicycle parts can be recycled. The objective of our collaboration with Gazelle is to produce bicycles from 100% recycled material: a Cradle-to-Cradle bicycle.
The starting shot for the
ReCycle project, in which Lease Plan is also involved, was fired during the AutoRAI. LeasePlan gave away new Gazelle bicycles with lease contracts for low CO
2 emission cars during the AutoRAI exhibition.
Recycling scrapped bicycles will help improve the availability of raw materials in Europe. More than 1.1 million new bicycles are sold in the Netherlands each year. That is equivalent to more than 20 million kilogrammes of metals and plastics that can potentially be recycled.
